FPTA Spotlight: Max Oliver, PT, DPT

My Path as a Physical Therapist

I’ve been a licensed physical therapist since earning my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Florida International University in 2018. From 2019 to 2024, I worked in general orthopedics. In August 2024, I transitioned into a new role focusing on the U-18 sports population through the outpatient physical therapy program at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

What led you to want to become a PT?

My journey into physical therapy began in my teenage years after undergoing knee surgery. I found the rehab process incredibly fascinating. Although I initially started college as a business major, I quickly realized that the business world wasn’t the right fit for me. After some reflection, I remembered how much I had enjoyed physical therapy during my own recovery. That realization inspired me to switch paths and take the necessary prerequisites to pursue a career in healthcare—and I haven’t looked back since.

What’s your favorite thing about being a PT?

What I love most about being a physical therapist is twofold. Externally, I truly enjoy connecting with patients and watching their progress—from their initial evaluations to reaching their goals. Internally, I value the constant push to grow as a clinician in order to provide the best possible care. This drive has led me to earn a Certificate in Orthopedic Manual Therapy, and I plan to take the exam to become a board-certified clinical specialist in orthopedics in the near future.
